Im 18 years old, live in southern california(L.A), and want to get car insurance for my 4 door, 1992 honda accord. I have no points on my license, but i do have **ACCIDENT** on my driving record. Is there any place that would be ideal for me to get insurance at. Im looking for cost effective places. Also do places still give discounts for students with good grades. Im a full time college student with a 4.0…

With all due respect, this gets asked many times every day and there’s no answer to it… How insurers are going to see you is going to vary, based on a bunch of your personal information So you want to shop around for insurance just like you are doing when buying a car or anything else.

Mark asks…

cheap car insurance for a teenager .?

I WILL BE GETTING MY LEARNERS PERMIT SOON… GOT DRIVERS ED AND WILL BE GETTING BEHIND THE WHEEL TRAINING.AND LOOKG FORWARD TO DRIVING A 2008 SCION TC ..ABOUT HOW MUCH WILL INSURANCE BE A MONTH… ANY STUDENT DISCOUNTS I CAN GET…?? ..OH YEAH IF IT HELPS ..I LIVE IN CALIFORNIA

Administrator answers:

You will be added to your parents’ policy as a driver and insurance for young people is not cheap. Some companies give discounts for drivers ed. If your parents insurance claims records are clear they should not increase too much. It is impossible to say without complete current policy details. Unfortunately, you are in one of the highest risk groups. Your rates will go down when you are 25. On the bright side, a Scion is a good choice since it is not a sports car.

I want to buy my first car, any help?

hey every one i am a 19 year old guy college student, i recently got my drivers licence. i will have about 2300 dollars saved in the bank in a few weeks, i want to buy a car under 2000$ since i want to use the remaining 200$ for the registration, luckily my father has offered to pay the insurance X )

-i have checked craigslist and have found Toyota Tercels cheap and some with miles a little over 100xxx, is that car a gas saver and reliable?

-i have also found some Saturns, are they cheap and reliable?

other cars i have found are Toyota Corollas, Camrys, Nissan Sentras, Honda Civics, Accords.(all are 90′s cars) how are these cars?

please keep in mind that i really don’t care about style, i just want a car that will take me from Home to College and Work.

i was going to buy a VW Bug (66-72), ive heard they are not comfortable and heard from some people that the require lots of maintenance( the last thing i need is to spend cash, also i dont have the money nor time to be a hobbyist)

by the way i live in LA California

William asks…

i need a used car, which one should i get?!?

hey i am a 19 year guy who is attending college in LA, California, i have saved up two thousand dollars ($2000). i just got my drivers license and want a used car. i have three cars in mind, toyota corolla (1990-94), honda accord (1990-94), and a classic vw bug (1966-73).

i have two older brothers and one has a classic vw bug and the other a 94 honda accord. i have rode in both of them, the vw bug seems to very unconfortable because of the suspension, and the stick shifting but i just love them (since i was 16). on the other hand, my other brothers honda accord is very comfortable with ac/heater and is an auto, not to mention that it seems way safer. for the corolla my aunt had a 90s one and she has said the car seems to like taking beatings.

so with a $2000 budget, what should i get?

i was told vw bugs are cheap to maintain, and that some get good gas mileage.

i like the way the accord handles, but are they expensive to fix? and are they problematic?

i have on my own researched corollas and tercels, some people seem to find them convenient, are they?

please keep in mind that i am only a college student, i have no job yet, but my father is willing to pinch in for the insurance. also i live only about four (4) miles away from college, and i plan to work close, also ill rather spend on gas than on public transit (10$ a week).

sorry for making it that long but i really want advice from some experienced car owners, thanks for reading

Administrator answers:

With only 2,000 dollars, I do not think you can really get a reliable car. But if you really must get a car, then get a honda civic or toyota corolla. They are cheap in parts.

Administrator answers:

I’d say your best bet is to look at the Toyota Corolla or Tercel. The Camry is a great car, but won’t be as good on gas. The Honda Civic and Accord are good options as well. Both Toyota and Honda have well-deserved reputations for quality, which also means, however, that their resale value is usually high. So, if you can find a decent one in your price range, go for it.

Steven asks…

I want to buy a Scooter?

So I’ve recently become a college student (Yayyy) and transportation has become very important; need to get to and from school as well as getting to work. I don’t come from a very wealthy family so I was already looking at waiting for a long time to get a car of my own.

Then today I saw a man on a scooter and I was like, hey! Those must be cheap! Sure enough, I was finding some brand new for $700ish. (Obviously I am going to buy one used because its cheaper) I also looked up the laws in California regarding scooters and I DO NOT need a license, registration, or insurance. So this all saves me money!

My problem is, I don’t know where to start. I want a scooter that gets good gas mileage (I saw one that said 100mpg!) and is durable/reliable. Not to mention one for a good price. I know craiglist is a good place to go for used, but what models of scooters should I look for? Any other sites that would be a better alternative to craigslist?

Administrator answers:

” I also looked up the laws in California regarding scooters and I DO NOT need a license, registration, or insurance.”

The SCOOTER in the California laws are those little stand on skateboard type toys — http://www.goped.com/ GoPeds, 29cc 20mph max. It is *not* allowed on sidewalks. Legally you need to walk in the gutter because everyone will be trying to running you off the road. You would be better with a pedal bicycle, faster.

A scooter meaning as a seat, like a Vespa, is legally a motorcycle — requires vehicle registration, insurance, and your M1 driver’s license. A used reliable Japanese or Italian scooter will over $1,000.

California, even here, has some bad days. Cold. Wet. Are you ready to be wearing raingear and jacket freezing cold? You can’t two vehicles while a starving student. A scooter is ONLY good if you are also willing the bad. You *will* be wet, cold, and you *will* fall to the ground and scrape skin. If you are one in 1,000 willing to ride only a motorcycle, go for it!

A cheap used car is warm, dry, keeps to carry your books, etc…
