William asks…

Help! Single mom with an upside down payment on a vehicle that needs engine replaced, insurance didn’t care?

In May of 2007 I broke my ride and still own it. In San Antonio 2007 it rained so much, too much, it flooded out my car. So here are the chains of events which lead to my car being an issue. My car got flooded
• Was towed and dried out-worked but ticked
• Brought to an oil shop to drain water-
• Oil shop never removed oil-
Car breaks-
• Get quoted for engine replacement and motor cost-$3,650
• Claimed to insurance
• Apparently was in between coverage when incident occurred (no INS coverage at time of incident)-got lawyer to lawsuit oil repair shop
• Fired lawyer (got ripped-off)
• Stuck making payments on a broke vehicle
So what can I do?
I’m a young college student, single momma all on her own, no child support or government (not by choice), and well luckily I’m pretty and it pays the bills. Yet this one I haven’t been able to fix since May, I need to fix it! Just want to know if I should fix (if so how to pay for that), trade it in with bad credit, or just pray for a miracle to help me? I need a vehicle to make income, to achieve goals, to take my son to the hospital when he gets ill; I just want my ride or a ride at a rate I can afford, how can I get that to get my life back?

The car is a 2003 Chevy Malibu with 150000 miles on estimate; don’t get to see it often as it sits on my folk’s driveway. It has an upside down loan out on it, the repairs are to replace engine and motor is locked. I’m looking for a way to fix it that is cost efficient for my status or to trade it in without having to pay monthly payments that are insane for a new to me vehicle( looking for cheap payments) I need a vehicle for work purposes, childcare, and to go to school. What are some ways to fix my predictment that what I’m inquiring? I’m all alone with no help, I’m seeking advice or actual people whom can help me achieve a better outcome than what I’m dealing with. What should I do?

How can I get a car going, in desperate need of one or some advice????

I’m looking for good heart and suggestion as to how I can fix this issue, not rude comments. Please I have already enough stress, I’m seeking advice as to how to fix mine, thats all. Not nasty comments.

Reminder I’m asking about how to fix my car and the problem I’m facing. Sorry if I offended anyone by having a good self esteem and confidence I’m not willing to loose over having problems.
I know this is not going to be free. I’m curious as to an affordable resolution to my problem that will get my car to be fixed or to get another vehicle? Is there a way I can make payments for it to be fixed, should I go to a school and buy the part for it to be fixed, should I trade it in( what type of vehicle would not make my payments sky high trying to stay under $400)or should I just give up and repo it? What is repo and how does it affect another car purchase?
I make money just haven’t hit enough to have that extra cash to fix my car, if it was a grand I’d do anyone and anything to earn the cash, I already do. I simply would rather know my options as to how to resolve this matter. So far all I’ve read is all I’ve done. I’m not an idiot or else I would still be living out of just a car and would of not been able to keep my son, I wouldn’t of been able to pay for a home, childcare,my broke down car, my life. This is a problem that is making my life strained because I want to be able to make my modeling gigs, bring my son to the hospital,go to college, and make my money however I can. I’m not looking for sympathy at all, my interests is to resolve this car problem how can I???

Administrator answers:

Wow that was alot to read, it sounds like you simply want a free fix for the car and it doesn’t work like that. If you need an engine you have three options, one is stop making payments and have your credit ruined, two is replace the engine while still making payments, three is to continue to make payments and get another car. You bought the car, you inspected it prior, I dont understand what the problem is, pay to fix it or get rid of it, either way you are responsible for the car payments on a car with that many miles even if it doesn’t run.

Administrator answers:

You could call some shops and get prices to put a used engine in the car, would be cheaper. If the whole car was flooded I would expect alot more trouble with the rest of it after the engine is fixed, maybe not worth fixing.

I just closed the deal for this car a day ago and I had already gotten a mechanic to check it and have been reading up on reviews for it. I am a student so the cheap gas and insurance was a major plus point for me. I would like to know your opinion before I go pick it up this Tuesday.

Thank you for your advice or opinions. =)

Administrator answers:

Actually not a bad little car. Compares to the Chevrolet Cavalier. Looks like it has all the toys you need. Far better choice than the Neon. Good luck. Keep the oil and filter changed regularly. Brakes and belts when needed and do not overheat the engine. Friend of mine has one and she is very happy with it.

Mandy asks…

OK i’m really not satisfied with any of the answers I got, so ONCE AGAIN, can I afford these?

Ok. So, I’m really not into the answers i got from my last question. So, if any of you penny pinching cheapos are going to answer my question, I want you to start it off by openly admitting to everyone that you are a CHEAP SCAPE. Put it in caps before your answer.

So, here is my money. I have have 10,000 in my savings. (i forgot i have 2,000 in another account) I have like 300 in my checking, and 150 cash in my wallet.

I live on a school campus. I will need to pay my school bill of 5,000 soon, plus my credit card bill of 1,000 (books) My car might need a new O2 censor, and i have a 100 dollar fine to pay.

For income, I make about $85 bi weekly for my first job, and roughly $350 bi weekly for my other job. On top of that , for every 1 day that I work (2 or 3 days/week) I will probably make about $65 dollars under the table cash in bonuses. OH also, I have 280 waiting to be deposited into my checking account because I sold that many text books on half.com

These are things that I want to buy:

1. headphones, probably for like 150 or so. I have a best buy coupon for 20 dollars off, so I want to get them from bestbuy.
Headphone Comments: for those penny pinchers who say “why would you spend that much on headphones, I got mine for 10 dollars and they are perfectly fine) or (you don’t need an iphone for your music, why don’t you just listen to music on youtube?) WELL. music on youtube is not as high quality as an MP3. Plus, your 10 dollar headphones don’t sound as good as the 150 dollar ones with the good magnets, 50 level bass, comfortable over the ear fit – etc. Once again, i’m not looking for “adequate that will do” type of things here, I like nice things. What’s the point of saving money when you can’t spend it on things that you want? Would i be happier with my money sitting in my account? no not really, i’d like my nice headphones thank you.

2. I want the crystalift microdermabrasion machine for $200. I already have an acnelamp which costed 250. It made my acne go away Sooooo well! i love the results. Now, i want something for the scarring. Microdermabrasion from the clinic is sooo expensive, Laser resurfacing is out of the question but this home microdermabrasion machine would be perfect if it works!!

3. I probably won’t even get this, but I have an american express card and every year they have this thing where they have deals for the card holders. They had a brand new 2009 BMW 328i for 17,000!!! Tomorrow, the deal is a 26′ Sharp LCD tv for $300. I’m going to try for it, so if i get it i’m totally going to be paying only 300 dollars for that 500 dollar tv!

SO, now for all the others who say that I need to stock money for emergencies…blabla Ok. I’m only 20, my parents still support me pretty much… my phone bill is paid for, my dad bought my car for me, I’m on their health insurance, etc. I’m not going to become unemployed because i’ve been with the company for so long and their even making money this year. I can’t think of any other emergencies.
Plus, i’m taking 18 credits and i’m a student living on campus. no students have “emergency” funds, let alone the amount of money that i have.
SO remember, i like nice things so don’t tell me I dont “need” something or I should buy something that costs less because that’s dumb. I pretty much think i can afford it ps..

I hope you like working, because I can tell from your questions that you never deny yourself consumer goods in order to save enough money to retire on. Happy work life!

Helen asks…

My son won’t listen to me, should I let him find out on his own?

My son is 16. He had $4,000 to spend on a car and we(me and my wife) matched with so he now has $8,000. He wants a Ford Mustang. I am familiar with cars. When I was a student, I worked for a private car dealer. After that I spend couple years buying cars for cheap and selling them for more, I did as a side job. I also bought quite a few cars myself. So I am experienced with cars. There are few problems with a Mustang:

-Me and my wife both drive very nice cars so we bought a cheap car for him to learn on. The car we bought him only has 75 horse powers. The slowest Mustang in his price range has 190-200+ horse powers. Slowest Mustang has twice the horsepower of what he is used to. I think he will have trouble adjusting and possibly crash it.
-We live in a area with lots of snows. We have heavy winters with lots of snows. Mustangs don’t handle well in the snow. You have to be a experienced driver to drive a Mustang in the snow. All of my friends kids who bought a rear wheel drive car(Mustang is rear wheel drive) crashed it in the winter.
-High insurance, bad fuel economy, higher cost of ownership=lots of extra costs. He will be living day to day and most the money he makes(if not all) will go to this car.

I told him this in person. I e-mailed him with the links that prove my point. He won’t listen. He keeps saying “but it’s a Mustang”. At first my wife was saying “a deal is a deal” but now she doesn’t want him to get a Mustang either. I don’t know what else to do, I warned him several times. Should we just let him find out on his own? I’m not giving him a cent if something goes wrong with the car and he needs money, or if he crashes the car and needs money. Or if he can’t pay the insurance or the gas…his car, his responsibility.
When I was 16, I wanted a Mustang too. I wanted a Mercedes-Benz, BMW, but life does not work that way. I bought all of those cars later in life, I currently have a BMW.

Administrator answers:

Parents are suppose to give kids guidance. Not let them throw their money away.
If he won’t listen, don’t match the 4000.
If he gets a car through a dealership, he needs a co-signer. Don’t do it.
Only sign off at your satisfaction. He’ll thank you later.
