Your Questions About Google Maps

Charles asks…

Is it legal to draw a map using google maps?

Let’s say I was commissioned to create an illustrated map of a small town. Would it be illegal for me to simply base it off of information I find on google maps? I don’t see how this would be traceable, but ethically is it normal?

If not, is the cartography industry kaput thanks to google?

Administrator answers:

Because Google Maps’ data is copyrighted, it is only impossible legally to use any of their data directly in publication, e.g. Printing a Google Maps image on a business flyer for directions. Since I am assuming you have seen numerous instances of this, though, it is obviously like jaywalking – technically illegal, but nobody has the time or effort to hold you responsible.
If you have a program such as Adobe Illustrator, you can trace your own new map on top of a Google Maps image (provided that you trust their publicly available data, and I would advise against that, based on my experiences). The map you draw is not subject to copyright infringement because it is your own work based on publicly available data.
Hope this helps.

Paul asks…

How do I change the language of Google Maps?

I live in Thailand and when I access Google Maps from here to see maps in Thailand, the language is completely in Thai (the streets have English names as well). Is there a way for me to force Google Maps to show these names in English?

Administrator answers:

Haha

Administrator answers:

Answering your first question, a town belongs in a large scale, so it not possible for you as an individual to measure it yourself accurately and draw it down. Therefore, you will need to use an existing map as a base.Afterwards, you may use your own (personal style?) to illustrate and refine the map. That would be ethical.

Google maps however, are not always accurate or up-to-date.(That’s where you can get caught) What is more, you cannot get specified scales from google maps.

The best solution for you you would be to request a map from the local archive. In case you are a student or you work for the municipality etc you may be eligible to download maps from an online service ( like the Edina Digimap for UK).

Cartography industry is definitely not kaput, but is largely digitalised. As a result, you cannot actually “see” the the whole process of making the maps, but just the uploaded product online.

How do I print a map from Google Maps? I want to print a street map of Moscow, Russia from?

Google Maps. How do I print it so that all the sheets correspond to each other and can be taped together to form a whole map? Do I have to do this manually, and hope for the best, or is there a special way to do this?
Oh, and I don’t want to print out the WHOLE city of Moscow, since it’s so big that it would require many, many pages. I just want to print up to the outer ring, excluding the suburbs and other areas that I won’t be visiting.

Administrator answers:

You can print screen it ( press control alt and print screen ) I think that’s how you do it look up how to do it but do that then open a word document or somthing up and paste it in to that make the size you want print it of then bam you have a map … From google maps

David asks…

How to find location on Google Maps by giving longitudinal/latitudinal coordinates of a place?

Well, during my trip to some place with my friends, i went to some new locations too. I have GPS coordinates of that place and just wanted to see them on Google Maps.
I wonder if there is any way which accepts coordinates values and takes us straight to that location without leaving us with much work to do? Help is appreciated.

Administrator answers:

Just type the coordinates into Google Maps.
